Comment on Gone too soon: Coping with the loss of a young pet by Lucy.
It’s really helped reading these to show we are not alone. I’m currently waiting for the vet to get here to put my 5 year old flatcoated retriever, Scooby, to sleep. He’s riddled with cancer, everywhere, and only started showing symptoms one week ago. It’s the second flatcoat which we have lost young to cancer, our last was 6. Both types of cancer were different and exceedingly rare and aggressive. He is still trying to wag his tail and play ball but he doesn’t understand why he is so tired, why hes so weak. We have made the decision to put him to sleep now before he is in a lot of pain, which is really hard to deal with as it’s not “ending suffering” or “in a better place” like others have said. He is happy, and he should be here, and he wants to be here. But he is at risk of suffering a lot if we don’t do it now. Every day is getting worse, rapidly.
I’m sorry to anyone who has to deal with cancer, it is an evil thing.
